Introduction

An interview game where the students go around the classroom asking their classmates questions. The teacher can then play bingo. To be followed-up with writing. 20 minutes.

The Story of Momotaro Writing and speaking. In lunch groups the students individually complete the story of Momotaro and then check to see if it is accurate or not. 45 min.

Kakobunshi Tongue Twisters Speaking/writing The students try to say the tongue twisters (e.g., think- thought- thought). 2 X 20 min.

Review A picture search activity that can be done individually or as a group. Reading/writing 30 min.

Let’s Together Very Enjoy writing/speaking students in groups answer questions using the grammar point and then get the remaining answers from the other groups 45min

Spaghetti is Eaten in Italy A Read and Run exercise. These cards are placed all around the room and the students in groups go one at a time to read the hints and return to their group to tell everybody. The students must write down the hints and then write the answer which would be the complete passive sentence. 30 minutes.

Sentence Scramble Writing Students unscramble the sentences so that they are grammatically correct. 10 minutes.

Is Wrestling Only Played by Boys? Listening/Reading/Writing. Students listen to the teacher read out statements and they circle the answers. Students then practice writing out questions and answers. 20 min.

Let’s Ask John to Join Us. Writing. Students write in the proper answers to the sentences. 15 min.

True or False? Worksheet either reading or listening. Students have to listen to the statements (or read them) and decide if they are true or false. If they are true, the grammar is correct. If they are false the grammar is incorrect! 10-15mins.PDF file

I Know Everything Quiz The students practice making passive verbs before moving on completing a quiz. 40 minutes.

Believe It or Not? Speaking/Listening. Students are given the worksheet and one answer sheet. Then they mingle and find all the answers to the question. For homework, they had to write the complete answer. If you don't want to mingle, you can just use it as a quiz game.(The answer to # 9 is "No, it wasn't. This picture was painted by an elephant!") 40 min.

What Makes You Angry? Writing/speaking Students write answers to personal questions and then use the info in groups. 30 min.

Chopping Onions Makes Me Cry Writing/Speaking After a brief review of the reading from 5-2, the students complete sentences on what makes them sleepy etc. and then exchange the information with their classmates. 45 minutes.

What Are We Preparing For? Writing/Speaking In groups, the students prepare for something that is written at the top of their paper. After allocating duties to everyone, the group reads out its sentences and the class must guess what they are preparing for. 40 minutes.

Told Us to… Listening/speaking. Students in front of class, act out teacher’s orders. 10 minutes

How Long Have You Lived Here? Speaking and writing. Students try and make a super group by using the target sentence. 30 min.

I Have Lived in Sendai Since 1999. Writing/speaking Students write about themselves then ask other people questions. 20 min.

I’ve Been to Osaka Twice. Speaking/Listening. Students work in pairs playing a bingo type game using the grammar point 45 min.

How Long Have You Lived There? Speaking/Writing A conversation is given to the students to practice and interview their classmates. 20 minutes.

How Long Have You Studied Science? Speaking/Writing In pairs, students choose a character that their partner must guess (this can be done repeatedly). Followed by a writing assignment. 15 minutes.

Have You Eaten Your Bon Bons? A battleship game students can play that involves using this grammar point. 20 min

Have You Ever Been To Detroit? -listening/speaking. Reverse roles: teacher asks each group `have you ever been to...' and the group has 30 seconds to answer as many as possible. 5 minutes.

Go Fish. Listening/Speaking Students have action cards hidden and are asking each other ‘Have you ever…?’ questions to get their cards and make pairs. 25 minutes.

I Have Never Eaten Horse. Writing. Group work. Students put heads down on desk and one at a time look at teacher’s written word. They then put the sentence in order. 15 minutes.

Have You Ever Climbed Mt. Fuji? Listening. Students listen to the teacher read out a bunch of sentences and they group into the correct category. 10 min.

Have you Ever? Speaking. Milling activity for students to practice the grammar point. 20 min.

Would You Like to…? Dating Game Speaking/Listening/Writing A milling activity where the students try to get as many responses from classmates as possible. Followed by a writing activity 30 min.

Would You Like to Go to China? Writing Students match up sentence clauses. Students then find words in a word search and make sentences. Students then try to guess the object in question. 20 minutes.

Do You Know How to Say Yagi in English? Writing. Students write a sentence and then the teacher collects them all. Get into groups and the teacher asks each group student questions.15 minutes.

Let’s Make a Skit Writing/Speaking Using the stem sentence ‘Do you know…’ students make skits similar to the examples provided. 45 minutes.

How to Bingo Speaking. Students mill around the room asking ‘how to…’ questions in order to complete the bingo card. Play name bingo after the students finish. Answer sheet. 25 minutes

Travel to … Students will draw pictures about an imaginary trip and describe those pictures by writing sentences using the target grammar. 30 min

This is the Coke I Drank in a Restaurant  Writing Students rewrite the sentences based on the clues. 15 min.

Sports Day! Writing Students fill out the worksheet using the grammar point. 15 min.

This is the Newspaper I Bought Yesterday Speaking The students, in pairs, ask each other about what they did recently. The students reply with the information on their worksheet (and a hand gesture to indicate they are holding something) that their partner then uses to fill in on their paper. 15 minutes.

The Way of the Grammar Students walk around, janken, and ask their fellow students “Do you have ~?” If the character on their own sheet is circled it means they do indeed have that item. If the answer is “Yes,” the interviewee signs their name in the space provided on the interviewer’s sheet. Once each student has tracked down five candidates who each possess a different item, they continue to write the sentences in the space provided. 15 min.

Who is the Lady Playing Golf? Writing activity using folks from Japanese pop culture. 10 min.

Sports Day writing/speaking Students work in small groups to practice the present progressive verb. 45 min.

Picture Dictation Listening The students listen to the teacher dictate sentences. After each sentence they must draw the scene. After all the sentences have been read and drawn, the teacher calls out the number of the sentence and, in groups, the students must show everyone their picture for each number at the same time. 25 minutes

A Pop Culture Survey Students will fill out a survey together in lunch groups to determine their favourite foods, movies, and celebrities and will have to use the grammar point to ask each other the necessary questions. 40 min.

Mastermind Speaking/Listening/Writing In Pairs, the students try to guess their partner’s secret sentence. 25 minutes

Pronoun Game Writing Bring in object. Get the students to write as many sentences as they can about the objects. 20 minutes.

Betting Game Listening The students, individually, in pairs or groups listen to the teacher’s hints and try to write the correct answer…while betting money. 20 minutes.

Review

STOP! Used as a warm-up or review exercise for stories within the text, the ALT reads from the text making mistakes. The students yell “stop!” and correct each error. 15min.

True or False Students sit in lunch groups. The Teacher puts a large print of both a True and a False card up on the board. The JTE or ALT reads true or false statements about the text (or true or false warm-up questions to begin/demonstrate). For each question read, one student is picked from each group to run up and slap either the true or the false card on the board. 15 min.

Jeopardy Review Students in groups play the game jeopardy as a review exercise. 35 min.

Sentence Hunter (PDF) Students write a sentence then walk around the room trying to record sentences of their classmates. 15 min.

Graduation Jeopardy Students complete a survey. You then take the results of the survey and use them for a Jeopardy survey. 2 classes (?).
