Getting a Criminal Reference Check in Japan

If you require proof of your good conduct in Japan (for example, if you are applying for a teaching license or teaching job in your home country, or for residency in another country), you should apply for a Criminal Record Certificate (”ΖίŒo—πΨ–Ύ‘ hanzai keireki shomeisho)

Where to Get a Criminal Reference Check Certificate

Go to the Certificate Section, Identification Division, Criminal Investigative Department of the Miyagi Prefectural Police Headquarters (close to the kencho). Certificates are provided free of charge.

Documents required:
- A document issued by an official organization requesting you to submit a criminal record certificate (e.g. prospective employer, university).
- Your valid passport
- A certificate of Alien Registration (toroku genpyo kisai jiko shomeisho  “o˜^Œ΄•[‹LΪŽ–€Ψ–Ύ‘)
- You will have to go to your local ward office to get this certificate, issued within the previous three months.
- It will cost about 300 yen for the certificate

It takes about one week to issue the certificate. However, in certain cases they may not be able to accept your application, so please call ahead to confirm.

Collecting the certificate:

- Once the criminal record certificate has been prepared, the police will contact you by phone, and ask to collect it.
- They will NOT mail the certificate.
- You may send a proxy to pick up your certificate
- They will require a letter from you giving them Power of Attorney
- They must bring ID such as a Driverfs License, Health Insurance card, etc.
- After you receive the certificate in its sealed envelope, DO NOT open the envelope, or the certificate will be invalidated.
- If you do not use the certificate for some reason, you must return it to the police.
