Dental Care

Keeping your teeth healthy
As at home, the golden rule is to brush and floss your teeth regularly. You’ll probably notice all your students and teachers brush their teeth after lunch at school. It’s a great habit to get into. Keep a toothbrush and paste in your desk.

Dental Products
There are many different brands of toothpaste available, including some familiar ones from home, such as Aquafresh and Colgate. You can buy toothpaste for swollen gums (haguki ga harete iru 歯ぐきが腫れている) or bleeding gums (haguki ga shukketsu shite iru 歯ぐきが出血している). Only some brands contain fluoride (fusso フッ素). Floss (itoyoji 糸ようじ) is widely available, as well as antiseptic mouth rinses like Listerine.

If you want to check how effective your brushing is, buying some plaque disclosing tablets (ha chekku 歯チェック). Brush your teeth as usual, then chew the tablet with your front teeth and use your tongue to spread it over your teeth. Rinse out your mouth and spit - don’t swallow. Red areas show where food and plaque remain on your teeth. Finally brush and floss again to completely clean your teeth.

Payment for Dental Treatment
Preventative medicine is not covered by National Health Insurance.  Check ups must be paid for in full by the patient, but are usually only Y2000 - Y3000.  Treatment is covered by National Health Insurance, which pays 70% of the cost.  You must pay the other 30% yourself (you can’t claim this back off Sompo Japan, as they dental provide dental coverage).  Golden fillings and white ceramic caps aren’t available on NHI and must be paid for privately (jiyushinryo 自由診療).
