Employeesf Health Insurance, of which all JETs are members, covers 70% of all medical costs. The 'JET Accident Insurance' policy, which is managed by Sompo Japan Insurance Inc., covers the remainder minus a 5,000 yen deductible. *Pregnancy and dental care are covered by the Employeesf Health Insurance but not by Sompo Insurance Japan Inc. Employeesf Health Insurance When you go for medical treatment, whether it be at a hospital or clinic, present your Health Insurance card at the time of payment and you will be required to pay only 30% of the bill. This amount, minus the 5,000 yen deductible, can then be claimed back by filling out one or two simple forms, attaching your receipts and sending it off to Sompo Insurance Japan Inc. These forms are available from the JET Programme website: http://www.jetprogramme.org/e/current/insurance/sompo05.html The Employeesf Health Insurance card (below) is 'credit card' sized so it easy to carry with you. There have been cases in the past where an ALT didn't have their card at the time of payment. If this occurs you will have to pay the bill in full, but most hospitals and clinics will allow you to bring your card to them in the following days and they will refund you the 70% of the bill that is covered by the Employeesf Health Insurance. Sompo Japan JET Accident Insurance Sompo's policy covers death and residual disability, medical expenses for accidental injury, death from sickness, medical expenses for sickness, personal liability insurance and rescue expenses. It does not cover willful acts, fights, crimes, suicide, wars, riots (excluding terrorist attacks), driving without a valid license (or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs), pregnancy, childbirth, premature birth or miscarriage, whiplash or back injury (without reasonable evidence) or dental treatment (unless required as a result of an accident). For further information on coverage, see the JET Programme website: http://www.jetprogramme.org/e/current/insurance/sompo01.html However, Sompo's insurance does cover overseas travel. The first 30 days of travel outside of Japan (including your home country) while you are still a contracted JET is covered. Once you decide not to renew your contract you will still be covered until the 31st of August (for July and August arrivals), or until you arrive back home, whichever comes first. |
