National Health Insurance

Your government-administered health insurance
is valid until the last day of your ALT contract. This is the insurance that covers 70% of your basic health care in Japan (such as when you have a cold). You must return your insurance card (•ÛŒ¯Š hokensho) to your school on your last day of work. Either hand it in to your supervisor or the school accountant, please donft forget!

If you will be remaining as a resident of Japan, youfll need to re-enroll in National Health Insurance, either through your next employer or by enrolling at the National Health Insurance Division of your municipal office.

Sompo Japan Travel and Accident Insurance

Your Sompo Japan Travel Accident Insurance Policy
is valid until 12:00 PM (Japan Standard Time) on August 31 OR until you return to your home country (whichever comes first). This is the insurance that covers the other 30% of basic health care, plus accidents and medical treatment when traveling overseas.

If you will be traveling after that date, make sure to take out travel insurance covering accidents and medical expenses. It may be best to take out comprehensive travel insurance starting from the date that you leave Japan, since Sompo insurance does not cover baggage, flight delays, etc.

If you need to make a claim at any stage to Sompo Japan, you can contact them on the English Hotline (Toll free): 0120-08-1572. If you need to contact them when you are back in your home country, please call them at the following number: +81-3-3593-1572.

Medical coverage after your contract is finished

If you receive medical treatment (within Japan, or abroad) after your contract is finished (i.e. after you return your health card), but before the Sompo insurance runs out, you must pay the full amount yourself. However, you can claim back the entire amount less the Y5000 yen deductible, even after you leave Japan. You can make claims up to about two years after a visit, but must designate a Japanese bank account (doesnft have to be yours) into which the funds can be deposited.
