How to React During an Earthquake

If you are at homec
- Get into a
safe place - under a table or other sturdy piece of furniture with a low center of gravity. Grab firmly onto the table legs. If you donft have a table, use a cushion or pillow to protect your head.
- Be careful of
broken glass or crockery. Wear shoes or slippers.

Turn off the gas/heater at the first shaking. If fire breaks out, extinguish it promptly.

Donft panic and rush outdoors. Glass, roof tiles, signs and other objects may fall.

Open doors or windows to secure an exit. Know your escape routes.
- After leaving the building,
donft return for valuables, etc.

If you are outsidec

- Protect your head and avoid dangerous objects
- The ground will be shaking and youfll want to grab onto fence posts or to lean against concrete walls. DONfT! These are extremely dangerous ? avoid going near
concrete block walls and fence posts

Avoid windows in case the glass breaks.

Cover your head with your hands, a bag, or whatever you are carrying.

If you are in an elevatorc
- Press all the buttons and
get out at the nearest floor.
- Donft get into an elevator during or shortly after an earthquake and/or fire. Aftershocks may follow.
- If you are trapped in an elevator, contact the building manager by interphone and request assistance.

If you are in a department store, underground mall, theatre, etcc

Stay away from shelves that may topple. Protect your head.
- Donft panic. Follow the instructions given by staff

If you are on a train/bus/in the subwayc
- Hold onto something secure and follow the announcements given.
- Donft rush out of the train.

If you are in a carc

Pull over to the left and stop your car. Keep the middle of the road clear for emergency vehicles.
- If you need to leave the car,
take your gshaken-shoh and insurance information, and leave the car unlocked, with the keys in the ignition.

If you are in the mountains or at the seac
- Beware of
landslides and tsunami.
- Quickly
evacuate to a safe place.
