Teaching at a Senior High School

The Sendai Board of Education currently oversees 6 senior high schools (soon to be 5) which are made up of 2 night high schools, a commercial boysf and a commercial girlsf high school ( to merge into one commercial high school in 2008), an industrial arts high school and a high school with a eSuper English Languagef program. The majority of ALTs in Sendai teach at a junior high school so a lot of the resources, seminar ideas and
sendaiedu.com activity ideas are aimed at these 63 junior high school ALTs. The senior high school ALT can easily overcome this discrepancy as these ideas can be adjusted with a little creativity for senior high school students.

There are many joys in teaching at a senior high school. English classes that involve the ALT are often called Oral Communication classes and in these classes, the staff may or may not utilize the accompanying textbook. This means you may be given more leeway in your lesson planning allowing more room for efunf activity ideas.

The studentsf ages range from 15 to 18 providing a more mature audience for your lessons. It is debatable whether the kidsf spoken English ability is more developed than their junior high school counterpartsf but the students tend to be a little bit more motivated at the senior high school level (this too is debatable).

It is recommended that the 6 senior high school ALTs establish some sort of communication amongst each other as a means to exchange ideas and advice.
